With a patent, you can protect any technical invention (device or process) against imitation. The maximum term of protection is 20 years. A prototype is not required to apply for a patent. The patent application must be submitted to the Patent Office before the invention is first published.

One advantage of the patent is that the Patent Office examines the protectability. This provides certainty as to whether the invention is actually new and inventive. However, it can take several years before a patent is granted.
